WestJet has unveiled a new design and features for travellers checking in by mobile phone or at a WestJet kiosk.

Guests can now use new features on the airline's web, mobile and kiosk check-in platforms.

They can: 
• Pay excess baggage fees as part of mobile and web check-in (this feature is already available on WestJet kiosks)
 • Move to an earlier flight, on selected routes, based on availability
• Re-enter the check-in process to re-print boarding passes and change baggage information
• Print boarding passes and baggage tags in a single transaction at selected airports where self-serve bag-tagging is available.

"We're pleased to unveil these new applications as part of WestJet's commitment to a remarkable guest experience," said Bob Cummings, Executive Vice-President, Sales, Marketing and Guest Experience.

"These applications offer big improvements to the check-in flow as well as increased kiosk usability, which is a benefit to both our guests and WestJetters in our airports.

We believe that, as demand grows for guests to customize their travel to suit their needs, so too will the number of guests using our self-service options." With the additional self-service options, travellers can drop off any checked baggage and proceed to their gate.

Delta Air Lines will begin offering in-flight Internet service on its long-haul international fleet, including its B777, B767, B747, Airbus330 and transoceanic B757 aircraft early next year.

The expanded Wi-Fi service will use satellites to provide coverage internationally and will complement the existing air-to-ground service already provided by Gogo for aircraft flying within the domestic US.

The international service will use high-bandwidth Ku-band-capacity satellites to provide global coverage.

By 2015 Delta will operate approximately 1 000 Wi-Fi-equipped aircraft in its worldwide fleet.

The expansion of in-flight Wi-Fi to Delta's transoceanic fleet is the latest in the airline's investment in enhanced global products, services and airport facilities through 2013.

In addition to Wi-Fi improvements, Delta has added more first-class seats and in-flight entertainment to its domestic product.

It offers flat-bed BusinessElite seats on its entire international wide-body fleet; the recently completed system-wide roll-out of Economy Comfort on all two-class aircraft; personal in-seat entertainment for both BusinessElite and economy-class customers on all long-haul international flights; updated Delta Sky Clubs throughout the system; and upgraded new terminal facilities for international customers at its two largest global gateways – the newly opened international terminal in Atlanta and the expanded international terminal opening next May at New York-JFK.

June 15, 2012 - Air Canada is revising its checked baggage policy for customers with an Economy Class ticket issued on or after June 15, 2012, as follows:

    Check one free bag and a 2nd bag for $100 CAD/USD (per direction) when you travel between the United States and the United Kingdom.

    Air Canada revised its checked baggage policy for customers with an Economy Class ticket issued on or after June 1, 2012, as follows:

    Check one bag free and a second bag for $100 CAD/USD (per direction) when you travel between Canada/the United States and:
        Europe (except the U.K.),
        Africa (except Egypt, Malawi, Morocco and Zambia), and
        the Middle East (except Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates)

The checked baggage policy for customers with an Economy Class ticket issued on/after May 18, 2012 was also revised as follows:

    Check 2 bags free when you travel between Canada/the United States and:
        India,
        Qatar,
        Saudi Arabia,
        Turkey and
        the United Arab Emirates.

The summer holiday season is here and many Canadians will likely be travelling abroad both by air and land over the coming weeks.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is making every effort to effectively manage the increased volumes of passengers during this peak period;. Travellers can facilitate their re-entry into Canada by keeping the following tips in mind:

Plan ahead to avoid delays at the border when you return to Canada.

The CBSA suggests that you avoid travelling during peak periods such as afternoons and weekends, and use the Internet to keep track of wait times. You can consult border wait times on the CBSA Web site, on Twitter, or on your cell phone at www.canada.ca.

You may also plan an alternative route back. Bring appropriate identification for yourself and for all children travelling with you, regardless of their age.

CBSA officers watch closely for missing children and may ask you detailed questions about the children who are travelling with you.

If you have or share legal custody of the children, have copies of the relevant legal documents, such as custody rights, on hand

Appropriate identification includes:
•an enhanced driver's licence (EDL) or an enhanced identification card (EID);
•a NEXUS card (used where the program is offered);
•a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) program card used in Fast lanes;
•a Canadian citizenship card;
•a Certificate of Indian Status;
•a birth certificate accompanied by a photo identification (such as a regular driver's licence) issued by a government; or
•a valid permanent resident card.

Declare all merchandise you have bought and have all your receipts on hand.

Officers may ask you to show receipts for the goods you have purchased and your hotel receipts to verify the length of your stay outside Canada.

Keep all of your receipts together and on hand to avoid unnecessary delays.

The CBSA wishes to remind all travellers that changes were recently made to the limits of personal exemptions.

Since June 1, 2012, the new limits of personal exemptions
are:
 After being away for:         You can bring back goods, tax  
                                       and duty free,    worth up to:

•    24 hours or more         $CAN200
•    48 hours or more         $CAN800
•    7 days or more            $CAN800

There are no personal exemptions for stays of less than 24 hours. 

Alcoholic beverages and tobacco products may be included in your 48-hour or seven-day exemption, provided you are of legal age, but certain restrictions apply.

Exemption on alcohol and tobacco:
Only one of the following amounts of alcoholic beverages may be imported free of duty and taxes (when stays are more than 48 hours): 1.14 L (40 oz.) of liquor; or 1.5 L of wine; or 24 X 355 ml (8.5 L) containers of beer.

The following amounts of tobacco products may be imported free of duty and taxes (when stays are more than 48 hours): 200 cigarettes; 50 cigars or cigarillos; 200 tobacco sticks; and 200 g (7 oz.) of manufactured tobacco (a special duty fee might be applicable). You must be of legal age in the province of importation.

Certain goods are prohibited or restricted from entering Canada (weapons, certain plant and animal products, etc.).
Certain restrictions exist related to the import of meat, eggs, milk products, honey, fresh fruit and vegetables, etc.

We understand that travellers may feel anxious when crossing the border and want you to know that secondary referrals should not be viewed as an indication of wrongdoing. They are a normal part of the cross-border travel process that any returning resident or visitor to Canada may experience.

If you are a citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the United States, you can apply to become a member of NEXUS, a program designed to expedite the border clearance process for low-risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States.

NEXUS members are encouraged to use their membership cards to save time by using automated self-serve kiosks in dedicated areas at designated international airports and by using designated lanes at the land border.

Members can also report to border services officers by phone in advance of their arrival in the marine mode of transportation.
