Air Canada Introduces All-Inclusive Price Advertising with Worldwide Seat Sale Marking its 75th Anniversary Celebrations

MONTREAL, February 8, 2012 - Air Canada today launched a worldwide seat sale to kick-off a yearlong celebration of the airline’s 75th anniversary and introduced a new, all-inclusive pricing approach to advertising that makes it easier for customers to shop, compare and determine the final cost of air travel.

“This is a seat sale that has been 75 years in the making and Air Canada is pleased to offer customers a chance to celebrate our milestone birthday by putting the world on sale until February 16. With these special fares, Air Canada is introducing a new, all-in approach to advertising fares that will prominently display a final price accompanied by a breakdown of the base fare plus the total cost of additional charges, such as taxes, fees and surcharges. Our all-in price advertising initiative is a response to our customers’ increased desire for transparency and simplicity when shopping for air fares, whether they do so through print advertising, online searches or by signing up for our webSaver email specials,” said Craig Landry, Vice President of Marketing at Air Canada.

Beginning today, Air Canada is adopting a new all-inclusive price display for its aircanada.com website, webSaver emails, online third party advertisements and print advertising. The approach uses a prominently displayed final price accompanied by a breakdown of the base fare and total related taxes, fees, charges and surcharges. Customers shopping online will find the information by rolling their cursor over the base fare. Final ticket prices may vary by routing and a la carte options selected. For sale details please consult www.aircanada.com.

United Completes Economy Plus Rollout

United Airlines announced it is now offering Economy Plus seating on all long-haul international Boeing 757-200 flights, offering economy customers the option of six inches of extra legroom. With the reconfiguration, the aircraft have 16 flat-bed seats in BusinessFirst, 45 seats in Economy Plus and 108 in Economy.

The 757-200 reconfiguration project, which began in late November, outfits those aircraft with 1,845 Economy Plus seats.

The 41 aircraft principally operate between New York/Newark and Amsterdam, Barcelona, Belfast, Berlin, Birmingham, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edinburgh, Frankfurt, Glasgow, Hamburg, Lima, Lisbon, London, Madrid, Manchester, Oslo, Paris, Shannon, Stockholm and Stuttgart, and between Washington/Dulles and Amsterdam and Paris.

“For many years, the Boeing 757 has enabled year-round service in long-haul international markets where customer demand doesn’t support the use of larger aircraft, and has allowed us to offer multiple daily flights between larger markets,” said Jim Compton, United’s executive vice president and chief revenue officer.

“Customers have long enjoyed the convenience. With Economy Plus, they now have a new choice in economy-cabin comfort as well.” Customers with premier status in United’s MileagePlus and OnePass frequent-flyer programs may confirm complimentary seat assignments in Economy Plus, when available.

As of Monday, January 16, National’s Calgary downtown location is moving to 114 5th Ave SE and they will no longer be operating as National at the current 10th Ave location (this location will eventually re-open as an Enterprise location).

Vancouver International to Increase Fees

Vancouver Airport Authority (VAA) announced on January 30th a 10-year strategy outlining C$1.8 billion in improvements designed to keep Vancouver International Airport (YVR) competitive and an economic generator for British Columbia.“YVR is facing increasing competition from other airports; both travellers and airlines have choices,” said Larry Berg, President and CEO, Vancouver Airport Authority.

“In order to remain competitive and an airport that British Columbia can be proud of, we must continue to invest in projects that make it easier and faster for passengers and their baggage to move through the airport.”YVR has set its sights on being the gateway of choice for travellers and airlines—particularly for the fast-growing Asian market.

To meet this objective, YVR will decrease connection times between international and domestic flights, enhance baggage systems and invest in terminal upgrades. The projects listed below will kick-start the Airport Authority’s 10-year strategy:
•    More than 700 metres of secure corridors and moving walkways to reduce connection times for passengers
•    New high-speed baggage systems
•    Upgrades to the original areas of the 1968 Domestic Terminal Building
•    Runway safety enhancements
•    To help fund these improvements, the Airport Authority is increasing the Airport Improvement Fee (AIF) from C$15 to C$20 beginning May 1 for passengers travelling to destinations outside BC.

Passengers travelling within BC and to the Yukon will continue to pay C$5.

The AIF at YVR will still be among the lowest in Canada, with most other major airports collecting C$25 per passenger.“YVR employs 23,600 people, is home to 400 businesses and generates C$1.9 billion in GDP for Canada.

It’s no surprise that we have to continue investing in our airport to ensure we remain an economic engine for our community,” said Berg.

“Every penny of AIF collected goes toward building a better airport for British Columbia.”More information about the airport’s 10-year strategy can be found at www.yvr.ca.
