WestJet Kicks Off New Service to the Caribbean and Mexico
Airline helps guests escape the cold Canadian winter.

WestJet commenced the first of nine new seasonal non-stop routes to the Caribbean and Mexico, with the departure of the inaugural flight to Montego Bay, Jamaica from Toronto.

"WestJet is thrilled to commence service to six new international sun destinations just in time for our cold Canadian winter," says Bob Cummings, WestJet Executive Vice-President, Guest Experience and Marketing. "International sun destinations are a big part of our planned growth for both WestJet and WestJet Vacations. With the addition of Montego Bay, Puerto Plata, Punta Cana, St. Lucia, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan, we are continuing our commitment to fly our guests where they want to go, when they want to get there. With secured aircraft to grow our fleet to 116 Next-Generation 737s by 2013, WestJet plans to fly to over 60 scheduled destinations."

2.2 Billion Air Passengers in 2007

Air traffic has witnessed an increase of 6% in 2007, reaching a historic high of 2.2 billion travelers worldwide, according to figures made public in December by ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation).

In its preliminary data, the Montreal based organization estimated at 7.3% the increase in passenger volume on international flights, including a 19% jump in the Middle-East, which is registering the worlds fastest growth.

In its release, ICAO also noted a 6% volume increase in domestic flights, reflecting the 14% growth in Asia, coupled with a fairly strong advance in North America.

 
New US document requirements take effect Jan. 31

Canadian travellers are being reminded that effective Jan. 31 oral declarations of citizenship alone will no longer be accepted by U.S. Customs. Requirements for Canadian and US citizens seeking entry into the United States through a land or sea border will be as follows: Canadian and US citizens ages 19 and older will need to present a government-issued photo ID, such as a drivers license, along with proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate or naturalization certificate; Children ages 18 and under will only be required to present proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate; Passports and trusted traveller program cards  NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST  will continue to be accepted for cross-border travel. All existing non-immigrant visa and passport requirements will remain in effect and will not be altered by this change.
