AIR CANADA INAUGURATES DAILY, NON-STOP MONTREAL-ROME SERVICE

Starting October 27, 2009, only year-round service with business class featuring lie flat bed suites between Canada and Italy

MONTRÉAL, June 20, 2009 – Air Canada inaugurates today daily non-stop flights between Montréal and Rome.  During this summer’s peak travel season, this service will link on a daily basis the Italian capital with Air Canada’s extensive Québec and Atlantic Canada network, as well as major cities on the Eastern U.S. seaboard.  Starting October 27, 2009, Air Canada will offer year-round Montréal-Rome flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, with same-plane service continuing on to/from Toronto.

“This is great news for Montreal’s Italian community and travelers in Atlantic Canada and the U.S. who will benefit from year-round direct service and substantial time savings,” said Ben Smith, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer. “The inauguration of our year-round non-stop service between Montréal and Rome strengthens Air Canada’s commitment to offer convenient flights from Montréal to key international destinations. Air Canada’s superior schedule, product offering and loyalty benefits through Aeroplan clearly make Air Canada the airline of choice for customers.”

For greater convenience and travel choice, this service is timed to offer connecting flights to popular destinations in Italy, including Bari, Lamezia, Milan, Palermo and Venice. As well, Air Canada’s Star Alliance partners Lufthansa and Swiss International Air Lines offer service from Montréal to Munich and Zurich respectively, further increasing connections and travel options.

“Given the popularity of Rome as a summer and business travel destination, we are pleased Air Canada will provide year-round direct access to Italy,” said Mr. James Cherry, President and Chief Executive Officer at Aéroports de Montréal.

Air Canada’s Montreal-Rome non-stop service will be operated using a newly refurbished 211-seat Boeing 767-300 ER aircraft offering a choice of Economy Class and Executive First service featuring 24 lie flat bed suites.  Further details and a virtual tour of Air Canada’s new cabin amenities, including personal seatback entertainment at every seat, are available at: http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelinfo/onboard/cabincomfort.html .

This summer Air Canada will have increased capacity across the Atlantic from Montréal by 35 per cent year over year, with non stop service to five European gateway cities including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva and Rome. With the addition of three new destinations this year, Geneva, Fort de France, Martinique and the return of Rome service, Air Canada offers non-stop service from Montréal to 50 destinations.  As well, Air Canada’s Star Alliance partners Lufthansa and Swiss International Air Lines offer service from Montréal to Munich and Zurich respectively, further increasing connections and travel options.

Global Airline Capacity Continues to Stabilise, Reports OAG

Decline is just one percent compared to July 2008

One year on since the world's airlines began to curb their seat capacity in the face of global economic pressures, the cutbacks are starting to stabilise with just over 315 million seats on offer this month, a drop of just one percent over July 2008 levels, reports OAG, (www.oagaviation.com), the world's leading aviation data business, as it releases its monthly report on trends in the supply of airline flights and seats.

David Beckerman, vice president OAG Market Intelligence, said,

"Airline capacity is often cited as a barometer of economic confidence. Carriers adjust their fleet and services in anticipation of market demand for air travel, which is vulnerable to corporate cost management and to disposable income of leisure travellers at times of financial uncertainty.

"The OAG figures, which amalgamate the planned operations for airlines worldwide, show a clear and very welcome upward trend from the dramatic declines we have seen in recent months. We can only wait and see if this outlook bears financial fruit in actual passenger numbers and airline load factors."

The world's airlines have scheduled a total of 2.55 million flights for July 2009, down by 3% compared with the same month last year, with a drop in capacity of 3.3 million fewer seats on offer to travelers around the globe. Last month, the year-on-year global frequency and capacity figures were down by 4% and 2% respectively.

WestJet, Air France and KLM announce launch of interline relationship

CALGARY, PARIS, AMSTERDAM, July 16, 2009. WestJet, Air France and KLM announced that, as of today, the two European companies will offer interline itineraries that connect guests into WestJet’s Canadian network. Initially, connections will be made through the gateways of Calgary and Vancouver, with the option to continue on to Vancouver, Calgary or Edmonton.

“This announcement marks WestJet’s successful first step in our strategic partnership with Air France and KLM,” commented Dr. Hugh Dunleavy, WestJet Executive Vice-President of Commercial Distribution. “Starting with only three Canadian cities allows us to take a measured and thoughtful approach to implementation, with the intent to expand this travel to our entire Canadian network. We are pleased to have the capabilities in place to start this interline relationship and excited to work with Air France and KLM.”

This interline agreement allows guests to board an Air France or KLM flight and travel on one itinerary to their final destination in WestJet’s network. This is an important strategic move, prior to the airlines potentially broadening their relationship with a reciprocal interline agreement and a code-sharing agreement.

This announcement supports WestJet’s strategy to increase connectivity, bring additional travellers to its network and offer more access for its guests to new destinations, while allowing Air France and KLM a great opportunity to strengthen their position in Canada.
